Doctor of the Day
TNAFP encourages physician members who are interested in getting directly involved in state advocacy efforts to volunteer as the Doctor of the Day.
TNAFP coordinates with the state legislature to supply volunteer physician members once a week during session, which typically runs from January through April each year. Volunteers are designated to serve any urgent, non-invasive medical needs of legislators or their staff during the day and get a chance to see first-hand how the legislative process works. TNAFP staff will help schedule brief one-on-one meetings with legislators, where possible, and provide materials to help volunteers understand the issues and feel prepared to effectively represent family physicians. There is typically also time to attend committee meetings.
The experience gives volunteers a unique perspective on healthcare advocacy and helps the Academy advance its legislative agenda.
TNAFP reimburses travel expenses for volunteers.
