Awards

TNAFP issues annual awards to recognize members and other individuals and organizations for exceptional contributions to family medicine in Tennessee.

The Family physician of the Year is the highest accolade given to any member. The award recognizes an individual whose medical practice and volunteer efforts embody the ideal family physician. Recipients are nominated by their colleagues for their outstanding contributions to family medicine, and to advancing public health and/or medical education and training.

The John S. Derryberry, MD Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual or group for exemplary leadership and character, and for outstanding service to family physicians in Tennessee. The award is named in honor of the late John S. Derryberry, MD of Shelbyville who served the Tennessee and American Academy of Family Physicians with honor and distinction from 1964 until his passing in 1998. Recipients may be TNAFP members or nonmembers.

Nominations are open year-round and the TNAFP Board of Directors votes to determine winners in the summer each year. Honorees are recognized at the Annual Scientific Assembly in the fall.
